Extreme Makeover: Kitchen Edition

July 23, 2011 in Home Décor

Are you itching to give your kitchen a facelift, but don’t exactly have a vault of extra money lying around?  Here’s a brilliant way to open up your kitchen without opening up your checkbook (does anyone use those anymore?).

Nix the cabinet doors. That’s right. It’s the summer – let it all hang out!

EXTREME MAKEOVER

This makes you nervous, doesn’t it? Think this kitchen is too risqué for you? Worried people will see your junk food stash and judge you? Don’t worry. I wouldn’t lead you astray.

First of all, put the screwdriver down. Don’t go ripping any doors off their hinges quite yet. Take a step back and assess the situation. Where are your high-traffic cabinets? Which ones hold your glasses and dishes?

PICK YOUR BATTLES

You can (and probably should) have a mix of doors/no doors. Too many naked cabinets will make your kitchen look cluttered instead of open and airy. It’s all about moderation (both this remodeling project AND your junk food habit).

Open up all your cabinet doors and step back. Which ones look good open? Choose doors that frame the sink or stove. You may have to do a bit of storage reshuffling to make this happen.

UNIFORMS … THEY’RE NOT JUST FOR SCHOOL GIRLS

If you’re opening up a cabinet that normally stores food, put the food in uniform containers. Matching jars are so much more pleasing to the eye than half-eaten packages of cookies.

Once you’ve removed the doors and filled the hinge holes with wood putty, cover everything with a fresh coat of paint. This will give you a more finished look. If you’re feeling daring, choose a different shade for inside the cabinets.

And. If you feel as though you’ve made a terrible mistake, all you have to do is put the doors back on. You haven’t wasted any money, just your time.

What cheap remodeling projects have you done?
