Create Your Wedding Centerpieces

February 12, 2010 in Wedding Planning

Want to give your reception a unique look, and cut your flower budget in half? Some of the best decorations at a wedding are the result of DIY projects, so get creative and make your own centerpieces.

Glowing candles

A group of colorful candles arranged on a mirror can make a dramatic centerpiece. The same look can be achieved with vintage candelabra accented with flower petals sprinkled around the table.

If you’d prefer a contemporary candle centerpiece, fill a shallow bowl with water and float candles and flowers in it.

Natural wood centerpieces

Curly willow and Manzanita branches set in vases make stunning centerpieces. Arrange them as high as you want and leave them natural or spray paint them silver or gold. Give them some color with a few fresh orchids or hang sparkly crystals from the branches to give them a cool, icy look.

Fish bowl centerpieces

If you really want to get guests talking, just add water and glass marbles to a fish bowl and put a few goldfish in there. Dress it up with petals or a ring of flowers around the bowl. Make sure you send those centerpieces home with your guests so you aren’t stuck hiring a fish-sitter over your honeymoon.

Fresh centerpieces

Fill vases with lemons, oranges or grapes to add a blast of color to your tables. Or, for a rustic look, create a centerpiece using a row of leafy potted herbs.

Depending on your décor, potted orchids, daisies and cactus gardens are also simple arrangements that are affordable and unique.

Unless you want to prepare floral arrangements the night before your wedding (not advised) it is best to avoid DIY centerpieces made of fresh cut flowers. If you really want flowers, see if a group of friends will arrange the centerpieces as their gift to you.

Get inspired and get started

The average number of wedding guests in 2009 was 128, according to the Wedding Report. With 8-10 guests per table you are looking at 12-16 centerpieces, so get motivated – save some money- and get started on your DIY centerpieces.
